Blackbutt Avocado Festival 2023: A Recap

The Blackbutt Avocado Festival, an annual celebration of everything avocado, once again graced the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail parkland near Memorial Hall on Saturday 9th September 2023, drawing avocado and festival enthusiasts from far and wide to partake in the festivities. As always attendees were greeted with a vibrant atmosphere filled with roving entertainers, wacky avocado-themed games, and refreshing mocktails.

One of the festival’s highlights was undoubtedly the presence of Alvin the Avocado, a beloved mascot embodying the spirit of the event. From posing for photos to spreading joy among attendees, Alvin added an extra layer of charm to the day’s proceedings.

Music filled the air throughout the day as stages set up beside the rail trail provided live entertainment, featuring local talents that kept toes tapping and spirits soaring. Meanwhile, adrenaline-pumping competitions like the AvoRoll and wheelbarrow races added an element of excitement, with participants vying for glory and the chance to claim a $500 cash prize in the fiercely contested AvoDrop.

For those seeking a bird’s-eye view of the festivities, helicopter rides proved to be a popular choice, offering breathtaking aerial vistas of the picturesque surroundings. And what better way to beat the heat than indulging in a refreshing lemonade from Blackbutt State School’s bustling stall?

The festival also catered to the adventurous souls, with CTC Youth hosting a skateboard workshop at the nearby skate park, providing thrills and spills for participants of all ages.

As the day progressed, the festival parade, featuring floats from community groups, a local car club, and the town’s two schools, paraded along the rail trail, adding to the colourful spectacle. Former committee president Jeff Connor and local councillor Gavin Jones took to the microphone, rallying attendees and promoting the day’s activities.

Inside Memorial Hall, festival-goers had the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of avocados with industry talks focusing on avocado growers. Meanwhile, Jason Peppler from Brisbane Valley Farm Direct delighted audiences with cooking demonstrations showcasing the versatility and deliciousness of avocados.

The festival saw a surge in visitor numbers with the arrival of cyclists who had taken part in the annual Brisbane Valley Rail Trail “Festival of Cycling,” with rides starting at Harlin, Esk, or Coominya, and culminating in the vibrant festivities of Blackbutt Avocado Festival.

Overall, the Blackbutt Avocado Festival 2024 was a resounding success, leaving attendees with cherished memories and a renewed appreciation for the humble avocado. As the sun set on another unforgettable day, anticipation grew for next year’s festivities, promising even more avocado-filled delights and community camaraderie.
